Piano, composition

With both French and Swedish origins, Stefan Orins was born in 1970 in Roubaix in the north of France. After two short years taking courses in a music school at the age of 12, he prefers to learn the music in a self-taught, exploring all kinds of sounds on the piano at home. During his study in an Art School, jazz-music starts to be a passion, he takes his first jazz-piano lessons with Jean-Luc Drion who introduced him to the standards...

In 1992, he joined the Music Conservatory of Lille, he studied jazz with Jean-Francois Canape, Yves Torchinsky, Cyrille Wambergue, Gerard Marais, Guy Gilbert, he also follows Master-Classes under Riccardo Del Fra, Tommy Smith, Dominique Pifarely, Bojan Z, the John Abercrombie/ Joe LaBarbera / Hein Van de Geyn Trio , Sophia Domancich, Helene Labarriere, Stefano Di Battista…

Between 1997 and 2000, he studied classical piano with Pierre N’guyen and during the period 2006 to 2009, with Caroline Wrobel Siesse.

In 1992, Laurent Madelain (b), Laurent Dionnet (s), Stefan Orins (p) and Peter Orins (dr) created the band "Impression". Olivier Benoit (g) joined the group in 1994. The band made several concerts in jazz festivals in north of France, in England and Belgium. In 1997, the quintet recorded on the Lyrae Records label by winning the JazzAround prize in Bruxelles. The line up of the band changes in 2002, Christophe Hache is the new bassist and Christian Pruvost is on trumpet. A second cd has been released in 2004 « le bénéfice du doute » a third one in 2012 « Toujours remuant » on Circum-Disc.

The "Stefan Orins Trio" was formed in 1996, with Christophe Hache (cb) and Peter Orins (dr).

In 1999, the duo Stefan Orins (p) / Eric Navet (percussion) wrote the music for the silent movie "The Cameraman". This duo is now expert in the live performances for silent films. They have written more than a dozen music for silent films.

Since 2000, Stefan performed as sideman to the singer Emmanuelle Bunel, he also played in Blues’In Machine, as sideman to Matthias Dalle. Stefan played also as sideman to the singer Corinne Letellier, they performed twice at Tanjazz Festival in Morocco (in 2001 and 2004).

June 2000, Stefan Orins Trio is selected to participate to the famous Jazz à la Défense music contest. November 2000, live concert on France Musiques in Alex Dutilh’s radio show « Jazz de Cœur Jazz de Pique ».

From 2000 to now, Stefan Orins is playing in Circum Grand Orchestra. After two albums under the conduction of Olivier Benoit in 2005 and 2009, the orchestra offers a new repertoire composed by bass player Christophe Hache. The creation took place in La rose des vents, Scène nationale de Lille Métropole in Villeneuve d’Ascq, on 30th April 2013.

In 2004, the cd "Natt Resa" from "Stefan Orins Trio" was released.
In 2005, the trio has been selected in the AFIJMA project "Jazz Migration", (the band performed in Paris Jazz Festival, Cluny Jazz Festival, Reims Jazz Festival, Jazz au fil de l’Oise, Tendances, Tourcoing Jazz Festival, Django d’Or ceremony in Nevers ... )

Between 2006 and 2008, Stefan played piano in the musical theater "ça" from the theater company "Les Mutants" (Belgium).
In november 2006, concert at Radio France for the radio show « Jazz sur le Vif » with Stefan Orins Trio and Circum Grand Orchestra.

In 2007, "Stefan Orins Trio" played concerts in Belgium (Koksidje, Brugges, St Niklaas) and Sweden (Malmö, Helsingborg, Stockholm). In september, the live music project for the silent movie "Die Augen der Mumie MÃ" was performed in Egypt, in Cairo and Alexandria. In october Stefan Orins Trio performed with Jean-Luc Cappozo (tp) as guest in « Petit Faucheux » in Tours.

Since 2008, Stefan plays in Feldspath, a project unusual in bringing together two already large ensembles, La Pieuvre and Circum Grand Orchestra, 32 musicians in all, under the single direction of the composer, Olivier Benoit.

Between 2008 and 2012, Stefan plays as sideman to the bassist-composer Jean-Pierre Fourment’s trio, in 2009 the band has been in the casting of the "Jazz à Vienne" music contest. 12 gigs in Czech Republic and Slovakia.
In 2009, Stefan played piano with the symphonic orchestra "Symphoniste Européens" in "Théâtre des Variétés" (Paris). Stefan Orins Trio performed at Festival Éclats d’émail in Limoges.

In 2010, Stefan Orins Trio plays in Lyon, Avignon, Montpelliers, St Claude. In October, the trio plays just before Mc Coy Tyner’s trio in Tourcoing Jazz Festival.

Since 2010, Stefan plays with the Polish "Max Klezmer Band" new Line Up ’Hush Hush’, they record 2 albums « Hush Hush » (2012) and « MKB Live » (2014). Many concerts in Poland (Gdansk, Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Gliwice, Sopot ...), Germany (Göttingen, Frankfurt, Oberhausen, Dresden, Bremen...), France (Lille...), UK (London), Italy (Genova), Slovakia (Kokcice, Sala…), and Russia (Kaliningrad).

In 2011, the "Stefan Orins Trio" performed in the Jazz Festival of Daugavpils in Latvia, at Sunside and Studio de l’Ermitage in Paris, in Rouen and at the Atlantique Jazz Festival in Brest.

In april 2012, Stefan join the futur-jazz-band "Pulsarus" in Katowice (Poland), for the recording session of the next album. « Bee itch » has been released on For Tune Records in january 2014.

In june 2012, he creates, in duet with the double bass player Nicolas Mahieux, the music for the silent movie "Paris qui dort".

November 2012, tour with Stefan Orins Trio in Liège (B), Clermont Ferrant, Limoges, Marseille, Toulouse, Montpellier.

Since 2013, Stefan plays with an Edith Piaf’s Tribute « Les Oiseaux de la Ducasse » with Valentine D.

During 2013, Stefan Orins performed with the pop singer Pierre Mottron, concert in Paris’s Sunside Jazz Club with Luigi Grasso (sax) and Christian Vasseur (guitare).

In 2013, Stefan creates, composes and plays with Ten Worlds, with Karine Gobert (vocal) and François Taillefer (percussions).

In september 2013, 14 concerts in Czech Republic and Slovakia with Stefan Orins Trio.

« Liv », the fourth album of Stefan Orins Trio has been released in june 2014, concerts in Petit Faucheux in Tours, Tourcoing Jazz Festival, Jazz Cafe Posk in London (UK), and on France Musiques’s Radio show « Open Jazz » of Alex Dutilh and « Jazz Club » of Yvan Amar.

Since october 2014, Stefan collaborate with Pascal Lovergne (bass) and the indian musician Suresh Vaidyanathan (Ghatam and Konnokol) for the Nandi project.

Stefan Orins wrote music for the band "Impression" during the period 1992 to 2000. He is the composer of his own trio. He wrote the music for 14 silent films. He also composed some songs for the Circum Grand Orchestra and Max Klezmer Band.
Stefan Orins also explored free improvisation in solo, with "Slam en Ciel" (Martine Salmon and Karim Feddal - slam) "Slam à fleur de peau", with Martine Salmon (slam), and in duet with, among others, Peter Orins (electronic), David Bausseron (g), Eric Dubois (g), Dominik Strycharski (fl) ...

Muzzix is a collective composed of 30 musicians and based in Lille (northern France). It supports each year many artistic projects going from contemporary jazz to experimental and improvised musics, performed in many various ways, from solo to full orchestra, from concerts to installations or performances.
